VaultPress – Solid WordPress Security
By Alan on Aug 14, 2010 in WordPress
So I got an invite to VaultPress last week and its pretty fair to say this is one service everyone with a WordPress hosted site should get.
In fact, it should be made mandatory as no other service comes close in my opinion.
Imagine the hours put in creating your content, editing images and defining tags when all it takes is some hacker to quickly get in and throw it all away. The Vaultpress backup system is based on the same platform WordPress uses so it was only a logical solution something like this eventually came on the market but thankfully someone did it right.
We have used a couple backup services but NOTHING compares to VaultPress. As I type this post right now VaultPress is backing up our site in an easily downloadable file where I can get our plugins, themes, images, posts, content and everything for the price of a couple lattes a month.
As for customer support – they have a team of people answering emails who are not only knowledgeable but willing to answer almost any question. My own experience has been nothing but positive.
When you talk about companies who will lead markets VaultPress is one for the security of WordPress users. My bet is this company stand-alone will be worth $100m in the next few years but hey – they already own WordPress
See a screenshot here of the reporting offered through the control panel.
Installation takes about 2 minutes and is the same method as installing any WP plug-in. Prices range from $15-$40 a month with a TBD enterprise package available soon .. and worth every penny.

Vaultpress was created and is owned by Automattic, the same company that owns WordPress.

I don’t get it. I have around 15 WordPress-powered sites right now. It takes two button clicks to backup both the full FTP and database. Why would anybody spend money on what can be currently be done for free? $100 Million? Don’t think so.

Benjamin,
To a lot of people time is worth more than money and anything AUTOMATIC is a big reason for paying for anything.
Your statement of “why would anybody spend money on what can currently be done for free” can apply to about a million products that get sold today. Absolutely has no standing in the economic world we live in. People will always pay for convenience. Not everybody, but you don’t need everyone to make a buck. This statement is usually made by consumers but every day since the dark ages companies and entrepreneurs prove it wrong.
Shaun, Yes – I thought it was spin-off but you are right.

They don’t own WordPress. WordPress is an open source project. They own WordPress.com. I really wish people could get this concept.

I was referring to WordPress.com, troll.

Automattic owns the “WordPress” trademark but I indeed think that they don’t own 100% of the intellectual property on WordPress source code because some core developpers are not Automattic employees.
Being an opensource project doesn’t mean it is not own by anyone (or any “company”)

Okay, but it’s a “convenience” that seems very unnecessary. WordPress already has database export. FTP backup works. I guess I don’t see the need for it.
