Another tip I've used is to backorder certain domains I plan on developing (that I don't have the .com). A year or two or three passes, then I get an email. I got it. All you are doing is helping the guy who owns the .com version of the same domain since it is a known fact that 25% of your visitors will accidentally visit the .com site.
