Double Check Your Portfolio

This happens to everyone and no matter if you’re a big domainer or little domainer most of us continue to buy domains and lose out on the simplest way to increase value to our portfolios.  This has happened to us probably a dozen times over the last couple years so please listen – yes, it includes everybody – Frank, Kevin, Michael, Rick, Elliot, Sahar – everyone.

Most of us have a list of names we want to keep for development, long term investment etc but for the most part there are just sitting there waiting for us to start our plan.

Tonight, tomorrow, next week.  Sometime – take 5 minutes and copy and paste ALL your top .net and .org (and any of the other extensions) names in Moniker’s bulk search and I am willing to bet that many of you – at least some of you will find the .COM is available for 1,2 or a handful of those names.

Obviously the .com is what everybody ultimately wants.  We double check our “development / long term investment” portfolio every couple months and low and behold every now and then some .com shows up that were dropped or missed.

Managing a portfolio is hard enough but this is one thing every domainer should do – big or small.

Good advice, Alan. I’d like to add if you own the singular form of a domain, to check if the plural is available. I had a $7 click from dentalbleachingsystem.com today and decided to check if the plural was available and indeed it was. So double your pleasure…

BTW, thank you very much for The Domain Game. I received my copy on Tuesday. :)

I saw this posted on SubliminalMessages.Com and just don’t get why anyone would want to buy a .NET or .ORG in the first place?!?!? All you are doing is helping the guy who owns the .com version of the same domain since it is a known fact that 25% of your visitors will accidentally visit the .com site. My $0.02 is if it don’t end with .COM, don’t waste your moolah.

Great tip. Another tip I’ve used is to backorder certain domains I plan on developing (that I don’t have the .com). A year or two or three passes, then I get an email. I got it. It also helps motivate me to now finally start working on a development schedule.

Sam – As you write replies like this many people continue to make TONS of money in extensions outside of .com, develop sites that sell for ten’s of millions in a .net or .org extension and yes, even make money parking every month.

Just because you only believe in .com doesn’t mean the other extensions are not real.
