wow! that was great! couldn't agree with you more. sad that so many suckers will lose so much money by investing in the new gtld's, but it's simply survival of the fittest. I also agree that the new extensions will give increased value to .com.

Hi, me again. One more thing.

About a decade ago, ICANN conducted some studies that determined a immanent need for .Museum, .Aero, .Jobs, .Travel and .Coop. Later, .Biz, .Info and .Mobi were added to the list.

We know how that story ended yet these were pinpointed industries that supposedly would have benefited most from specific TLD's. The only tiny problem was that no one wanted them.

I just don't get what makes anyone out there think that this will be any different -- especially since .COM has now had so much longer to permeate every aspect of our lives. And, on top of that, the new gTLD's won't roll out until 2014, giving .COM even more time to solidify itself as the de facto standard!!!

They say that those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. This seems to me like a classic case of history repeating itself.

My suggestion to all of you is to stick with .COM. Just like real estate, it will continue to be the prime location on the internet, the oceanfront domain of cyberspace. .COM = Location, location, location.

I agree with Don (above)

ICANN's plan is conceptually flawed and will ultimately prove to be a huge .FAIL when the names become available in 2014.

Stick with .COM -- if for no other reason, it's where the customers trying to access the new gTLD's are going to accidentally end up.

I have to strongly disagree with what your saying, the very fact that new TLD's will themselves become keywords makes even the title of this article self-contradictory

.sport (keyword)
.music (keyword)
.porn (keyword)

need I say anymore ?

Alan,

Excellent post! I have been building up my number of Web sites based upon geo-targeted domains as well as a few product specific domains. My biggest problem (as I see it) is that I have not been working in high volume + high CPC industries. That is the next step to work on...

Thanks,
