candy_com$3 million later and Candy.com is live. The site is practically perfect and has incorporated everything from bulk candy to retro candy (you know, the sweet candy we all can not believe we are actually old enough to consider retro)

Its not very often domains sell and re-appear with sites which look as good as this. Rick must be proud today – I would imagine this is what he always envisioned (along with that big old check lol)

Visit Candy.com – check it out!

I really doubt candy.com is going to make $3 million dollar profit in this lifetime…i bet Rick would not buy this domain back from them for $2 million…neither would anybody else!
The new owner of candy.com got screwed!
Who here is going to buy candy from candy.com?
This is something you buy from your local store, not online!
    Anyways, good luck with candy.com

    Anunt,

I very much disagree. We are not privy to the business plan of Candy.com but i assure you if someone is spending $3m their plan is not based around some PPC ads and the sale of a couple goobers here and there.

Think about the candy distributors who stock your stores every week – most of them paid $2 or $3m for their warehouse alone.

Maybe Candy.com aims to be a national distributor with a storefront for smaller retail sales and if that’s the case $3m is well spent.

The argument of whether the name is worth $3m or not is an old one – and one where those who venture only online with PPC ads or affiliate programs seem to many times not justify. As I’ve said before most domainers are not businessmen but simply owners of domains – more like landholders who can not, have never and never will be able to build a house on the land – thus their valuations will only be limited to what they know and never reflect the values “real” business can put on them.

$3m is not a steal but its a fair price imo for a name that defines an industry like this.

Will they make the money back, I sure hope so but at this point I think we all need to congratulate them on a wonderful launch and wish them the best of luck rather than beating a dead horse about the purchase price.

3 million is peanuts, i should say choclate coated peanuts compared to what major candy companies spend promoting candy.

Great looking website. I think they will do especially well in the occasions and gifts area.

Anunt – read the classics … Positioning and Marketing Warfare … don’t think for a second that Rick doesn’t know what he is doing.

Nice looking site! It’s a great chance that it will do okay, especially when you consider that most of the items that they carry is probably not available in a lot of countries outside of the U.S.(sales could come in from all over the world).

Ron W: No shipping outside US. Would love to order from the site but only lists United States :( Candy is heavy so doubt shipping could ever be reasonable to outside US/Europe unless they have a distro this side of the pond!

@IrishDomainer.com, that’s too bad that they don’t ship worldwide (who knows, maybe they plan to get a distro deal on that side of the pond…to satisfy candy lovers worldwide!). US candies are very popular here…and I’m sure that it would catch on with consumers Internationally!
